SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - Google announced Tuesday it plans to remove its search engine from schools’ use if they choose to remove AI tools from their classrooms. The move comes after growing criticism from advocacy groups and senators about the spread of Google’s AI services available in education.Google’s AI products, branded under the name Gemini, were automatically activated for schools using Google Classroom. Google markets its Gemini chatbot as an educational tool that can help educators plan lessons or tutor students.Schools that choose to allow AI will get the option of using the new tools. Schools that choose to omit Google’s AI will not have access to its search engine. In September, the Florida Board of Education approved new regulations and guardrails on the use of artificial intelligence in the state’s public schools, colleges and universities for students and teachers.According to Google’s announcement, the changes are expected to roll out in early 2027.
